The Walnut Creek Police Department (WCPD) has a new police chief, and the public is invited to celebrate the news.
Meet & Greet With Walnut Creek Police Chief Ryan Hibbs

Upon the retirement of Chief Jamie Knox on December 30, 2025, former Captain Ryan Hibbs stepped up to the position of Chief of Police for the City of Walnut Creek. A 24-year police veteran, Chief Hibbs has been with the Walnut Creek Police Department since 2009.
“I’m always happy when we can promote from within,” said City Manager Dan Buckshi. “Ryan will be a strong leader following Chief Knox’s retirement,” who served as chief for close to five years.
“I am deeply humbled to be selected as the next police chief for the Walnut Creek Police Department,” Chief Hibbs said. “I am committed to upholding our department’s tradition of integrity and community partnership, strengthening trust with residents, and supporting the women and men who keep Walnut Creek a safe, welcoming, and vibrant place for everyone."
Earlier this year, Chief Hibbs and several members of WCPD were sworn in during a private ceremony held in the Walnut Creek Council Chambers. Now the City of Walnut Creek is hosting a free Meet & Greet event and inviting the public to meet Chief Hibbs in a casual, social setting on Wednesday, February 4, in the Rotunda at the Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Drive. Residents are welcome to drop by any time from 5–6:30 pm.
Since joining the Walnut Creek Police Department, Chief Hibbs has been a patrol officer, defensive tactics instructor, and field training officer. He was assigned to the Community and Downtown Policing Team and has been a member of the Crime Scene Investigations Team.
Chief Hibbs holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from National University, an Administrative of Justice degree from Lassen Community College, and is completing a graduate degree in negotiations, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding at California State University, Dominguez Hill. He is a graduate of the Drucker Executive Leadership Institute and the Peace Officer Standards and Training Executive Development Course, and is an active member of several professional law enforcement organizations.
